I can’t find any references to Brooklyn’s Fourth Avenue “Parkway,” except on this 1907 Sunset Park corner structure, with its lovely lettering and engravings that harken back to a more bucolic borough.
According to a 1903 New York Times piece, Fourth Avenue from central Brooklyn all the way to Bay Ridge was supposed to have a miles-long island of greenery, sort of like Park Avenue. “When this improvement is complete, Fourth Avenue will be one long garden,” the article states. Hmm.
Sunset Park is a neighborhood worth checking out. Best View in Brooklyn can show you around.

As reported in the NYT’s the Parks Department did an extensive planting along 4th Avenue through Sunset Park. A multitude of bushes, plants and trees, at great cost of tax dollars were planted. Almost immediately after that – in true New York fashion – they were torn up to make way for the construction of the 4th Avenue R subway train!
