The 37-story New York Daily News building, at 220 East 42nd Street, is pure Art Deco beauty.
And it’s even more of a masterpiece thanks to the illuminated 12-foot globe that’s been revolving under a black glass dome in the lobby since 1930.
“Around it, spreading across the floor like a giant compass and literally positioning New York at the center of the world, bronze lines indicate mileage to various international destinations,” writes Fodors.com.
“The Daily News, however, hasn’t called this building home since the mid-1990s, 15 years after it played the offices of the fictional newspaper the Daily Planet in the original Superman movie.”
It attracts lots of gawkers today, just as it has for 80 years. [Image above courtesy of New York Architecture]

It is THE NEWS building, not the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS BUILDING, it was built by The Tribune Company the Chicago based owners of the NY Daily News. The globe when new was painted amongst others by Theodor Seuss Geisel. Dr. Seuss to you!

Since the New York Daily News calls it the New York Daily News Building, I’m going to defer to them:

I worked for the New York Daily News at the building. While it was then the home to the newspaper it was still The News building, (see name in stone over 42nd Street main entrance) The NY Daily News took up relatively little space in the building which had offices for news services from around the world.

I recall taking a school trip there and being impressed by the globe. I love newspapers and news people and wonder what will become of such wonderful institutions.

I love the info about distances to various world cities on the floor too. They include Peiping, the Chinese city we know as Beijing today.
