At least in the case of NYU, I think preserving that sliver of a facade was supposed to convey that they were a good neighbor.

Not a fan. Rarely do these developers decide to preserve the facades out of the goodness of their hearts—it's almost always a token response to help quell neighborhood protests, and architectural consideration is an afterthought.

Say what you will about the Hearst Building, at least the architect gave it some thought.

I'd love to know where this picture came from! My father was the Class of June '42. Also Norman Mailer was a graduate of this school. I keep in touch with two old alumni who head East and West Coast Reunions for BHS. They love seeing any of these old pictures that I alert them to. Thanks for this new one!

WHAT... No Manatee???? Must have been out of season! Green Turtles... yeah... I've always wanted to cook and try some... God forbid you bring one of them in... until after dark that is ;) As a Sportsman the only real surprise is the Red Head Duck going for $2.50 and the Canvas Back for $1.50... they are equal fare... very high on the culinary scale both then and now.

this has always baffled me. how can you dig a tunnel like that almost under the noses of the people opposing you, and hide it? and, how could everyone have forgotten the location of the tunnel, until the BMT routes were being built?
