If you’re looking for an East Side apartment

Across from Serendipity 3, on East 60th Street, is the Ambassador Terrace, with their lovely 1950s-era (1960s?) vacancy sign. Anyone know what LO stand for? The only LO I could find was for LOuisiana in Canarsie.

I spoke to my father…an old time New Yorker. The telephone exchange LO-3 stands for Longacre.

LO3 was Longacre. I’m surprised you came up with LOuisiana; that WAS an exchange in Brooklyn back in the 1930s, but was discontinued back in 1933!

LO exchanges in New York were:

    LOrraine 2, 7, 8, 9
    LOngacre 3, 4, 5
    LOuisiana 9

LOuisiana 9, as I said, was discontinued in 1933; LOrraine 9 started in 1940, so this was how there could be two LO 9 exchanges.

Not only did you find an old-style phone number, but the address of Paragon Mutual Investors Service has a pre-ZIP Code zone number, 18. Very rare! Can we assume that it translates into the current 10018? The Broadway address would then put it somewhere between Times Square and Herald Square. Location, location, location!
