A celebrity mobbed by cameras in Union Square

Posing for the paparazzi may be too much for Alec Baldwin.

But it’s a walk in the park for this relaxed (maybe slightly sick of all the attenion?) red-tailed hawk, snapped hanging out in Union Square Park this afternoon.

He’s perched on the low fence surrounding the playground—maybe eyeing a toddler for dinner?

UnionsquarehawkcloseupPerhaps he flew over to Union Square from Tompkins Square Park, where EV Grieve photographer Bobby Williams regularly catches him swooping in for a snack.

These hefty raptors aren’t that rare anymore; at least a dozen breeding pairs have made the city their home recently. This New York City Audubon report gives more background.

Oh wow…maybe a descendant of the famous Pale Male?

    Maybe…he won’t say!

He eats Toddlers? Well he would be one dead bird if he ever tried that on my grand child

No, judging by its markings/appearance, this Hawk looks more like Bobby, the male who lives in Washington Square Park with his mate Rosie. It does not look like the Hawks Bobby Williams photographs (which are mostly juvenile Red-tails).

I document Bobby and Rosie on my WSP Hawk blog http://rogerpaw.blogspot.com/ .

I’ve followed Rosie or Bobby to Union Square Park several times over the last few years. Their main territory is WSP but they have gone to USP often to hunt or train their offspring how to hunt.

I was in Washington Square Park with Bobby yesterday not long before the photos in your post were taken. Bobby had headed northeast from WSP so I figured he might have gone to USP. Nice to see where he ended up!

I can’t say for sure it’s Bobby (due to the quality of the photos) but as soon as I saw your photos I recognized him so I’m pretty sure it’s him. 🙂

These birds must have a culinary field day with all the city pigeons about, not to mention rodents
