Television’s Tom Verlaine had a solo show scheduled at early-80s New Wave/punk venue Peppermint Lounge 26 years ago this weekend, according to this ad from the East Village Eye.
This final incarnation of the Peppermint Lounge (it was originally a dance club in midtown in the 1960s) has been kaput since the mid-80s; today it’s a Bebe, the women’s clothing store.
The Peppermint Lounge is preserved forever in all its grunginess on DVD in a scene from the great 1982 movie Smithereens.

This Verlaine show circulates among collectors. It’s quite good. Thanks for scanning this page from the East Village Eye.

The original Pep was on w.45th st. between 6th & 7th ave., the site of the peppermint twist song made famous by joey dee in the late 50’s/early 60’s…
THAT is the one in the movie Smithereens.
I believe it became GG Barnum’s either before or after the move downtown…GG’s was a tranny/gay themed circus bar/dance club owned by some mafioso who was gay.
The last Pep on 5th. ave and w.15th st. was originally a three-floor disco called The Electric Circus, hence the painted 3 rings (faded) on the main floor.
The Pep, The Ritz, Mudd Club, Danceteria…There are NO good clubs anymore in the city.
